Since I do not have a daily update to share with you lots because my life is ruled by my job and pretty uneventful after work, I have decided to write on topics inspired by song titles in our iTunes. Should I shuffle or just pick Belle & Sebastian interesting song titles? :)
It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career
Or is it already? Define career, wise man might ask.
I always imagined a career would be Melanie Griffith in Working Girl from PA to Boss or Charlie Sheen in Wall Street; someone climbing the corporate ladder; someone recognised for their efforts and wits; someone who makes lots of $$$.
But now, I've been working for 9 years:
2 years holding odd jobs as a PA in a French school, a babysitter, a french tutor, a computer tutor, a waitress and a conference and incentive assistant.
5 years as a marketing exec in an IT security company; where I worked my arse off and earned peanuts, drove a tiny car that I loved just because it was mine, althought technically it wasn't, it was Kitem's, and owned a nice apartment in a new development.
6 months unemployed, trying to live the dream in London to have a nicer life.
18 months in the perfect job, where I get to shine everyday.
It may not be a career, but it brings enough money home and this time I have a very nice car with my name on it and I live in a lovely area of the city and I am happy to go to work every day, and my boss appreciates my work and rewards me in consequence; I always have projects to look forward to; and I may not be a manager, I may not be in the news for being the best person in the world at my job but I know I'm good and my peers recognise that, and my parents and loved ones are proud of me and that means the world to me, that's more than I could have ever wished for outside of Hollywood.

Isnt that all that matters is that your loved ones love you and you are happy with what you are doing. I know its hard to accomplish tasks when you are recognized for them but we all try. I know at home here is if J doesnt say something about how well the house looks when he comes in I feel like I did nothing that day but if he says honey it looks great in here I feel like I accomplished the whole world.
Tweetey, yeah, appreciation is key isn't it? It's great J notices and appreciates it.
I loved that movie.
And you are soo fortunate that your worth is recognized. Money doesn't hurt but you can stand a lot less money when people smile at you when you come to work. And the people smiling are the ones in power. And all the money in the world won't make a crappy job with people who don't give a #$#%^ about you, a good one.
Career? That word is scary. I'm just working until I could figure out how to get financing for what I really want to do, instead of doing what I'm doing now which is, managing someone's Unix systems. I don't even want to do that. I just do it because I'm good at it.
So, let's take over Hollywood. You can act, I'll write. Or you write, I act. Either ways fine with me. Sound better than what we're doing now? I think so. I'll send in my two week notice first thing tomorrow morning.
I don't think it matters what you are doing as long as you are happy doing it! Having your family proud of you helps a bit too! Being appreciated by your employer means more than a lot of things in job satisfaction!
It's great that you like your job.
So rare for people these days.
Jeannie, she inspired me to take work seriously, but I watched it a hundred times for Harrison Ford. :D
Zombie Slayer; don't give your notice just yet. Write that script first. Plus I don't think I'd make a good actress at all.
Jenny, yes, it's top cool!
Hammer, I think friends and jobs are pretty much like Love; there must be sparks for the relationship to work
Your final paragraph is the best definition of success I've seen in a long time! You've gained a lot of wisdom in 9 short years.
That really is all that matters! Your boss apreciates you, your peers love you and you drive a nice car :-)
What more is there?
LOL.
By the way, we're back from the honeymoon.
For some reason my link won't link me back to my new URL since I've switched blogs, but just follow me there:

Good for you!
Spending your day in a way you don't hate is way, way important.
