To go or not to go

I've been starring at the Nadine and Jaco's wedding invitation for the last 45 minutes, wondering whether I should go or not. I feel bad that Alex cannot make it either way, because he's got exams coming up in March for his Legal Practice equivalent.

But I can go, I can afford it, and I've got plenty of leave to take. It would be a shame to fly to Durban via Johannesburg without stopping to say 'Hi' to the team there. Of course, a stop over would add to the cost, but it would make the flight cost worth it. Besides, Alex is more interested in discovering Cape Town than Jo'burg.

Flight to Joburg is 385, which is a very good rate, it's usually over 420 pounds, and the connecting flight to Durban is 140, hotels seem to start at 36 pounds a night. Of course, with that kind of money I could buy a European trip for Alex and I in a long weekend... and still discover Cape Town together. But how many wedding invitations will I get from South Africa???

What would you do if you were in my shoes???

I read the murder rate is 12 times higher in SA than the US.

Not sure if that is everywhere though.

If you do go be careful.

I've had a strange hankering to see Africa - I'd go. But I have to admit I don't know what this would cost you, in Canadian coin...I'm terrible at converting.

Oooh...that's a tough one. Going alone would suck, but SOUTH AFRICA? how cool is that?

Yeah, I'd go, but i'd try and take a friend.

What a neat opportunity, though. Be sure to blog about it if you go, and put up lots of pictures so we can live vicariously through you. :-)

If you are the sort who can do things on your own (because your friend is getting married and won't be able to babysit you) or if you can take some other friend or know others invited, I would go. If you are like me and need people to make it an adventure then I would wait on Alex and visit the newlyweds sometime later. I'm not sure I would do the sidetrip unless there is something you can gain beyond just saying hi. The price seems reasonable enough.

I agree with Jeannie. I hate going places by myself. Well if you decide to have to go have fun for all of us here and like some one said earlier take lost of pix. Its a hard decision esp when you are traveling a lone. Its a nine hour car ride from our house to my moms house and I wont go alone with the girls. I always make sure J has the time to go with us. I was going to ask another stupid question. If its 4:51 pm here in the united states what time is it where you are at??? Sorry for the questions. I have so many friends here in the U.S from other countries I love to ask. One friend is from the USSR. AKA Russia. LOL.... Well I suppose. Always something to do when the kids are up. Tweets.

With some shopping around you can get cheaper flights.

The price you're paying for the flight from Johannesburg to Durban is too high. You should be able to get it for 50 pounds or less.

You may also be able to get a cheaper price for the flight from London to Johannesburg (e.g with Nationwide).

In my opinion coming to South Africa and not seeing Cape Town or the Kruger National Park is like driving to a theatre and not going inside.
